Neville Hill Depot – Carbon Neutral Feasibility Study

Energy Efficiency and Carbon Neutrality Study was required for Neville Hill Train Maintenance Depot, operated by Northern Rail in Leeds. This resulted in the identification of a local heat network from the local Recycling and Energy Recovery Facility (RERF) which could supply low carbon heat to the Depot helping to remove all gas consumption on site.

The Challenge

As part of an Energy Efficiency and Carbon Neutrality Study conducted for Neville Hill Train Maintenance Depot, operated by Northern Rail in Leeds, Q Sustain were tasked with identifying ways to make their highest energy-consuming asset near carbon neutral.

Our Solution

Q Sustain identified and then proposed a connection to a local district heat network (DHN) from a neighbouring Energy from Waste (EfW) facility, identifying the concept and going on to develop a scheme design, currently live project, ready for signing Heads of Terms with Leeds City Council.

The project involved stakeholder engagement, early contract discussions for the Heat Energy Supply Agreement, a technical review of standard contract terms and conditions, and the development of a comprehensive risk register with corresponding mitigations. Additionally, the project included technical aspects such as initial concept designs for heat pipework and routes, assessing connection locations, identifying necessary infrastructure for the heat exchange, and high level cost estimation.

A techno-economic comparator of the heat network connection with alternative low carbon technology such as Heat Pumps was also provided as an output of the feasibility study along with a like-for-like gas replacement was compared. The carbon savings and potential energy cost savings were provided in detail.
