Avanti West Coast faced sustainability challenges at its stations, including outdated heating controls leading to excess energy use and hindered emission reduction efforts. Q Sustain surveyed eight stations to improve heating system controls to address inefficiencies and enhance sustainability.
Avanti West Coast faced several challenges in its quest to enhance sustainability at its stations. One major hurdle was the outdated heating control systems, particularly the boiler controls that failed to schedule heating effectively with heating sometimes being left on accidentally in the summer months. This inefficiency not only led to excessive energy consumption but also hindered efforts to reduce carbon emissions. Additionally, the lack of insulation on exposed pipework and inefficient electric heaters in waiting rooms contributed to heat losses and heightened energy usage. Q Sustain were tasked with surveying 6 of their stations and providing a plan to improve the controls of their heating systems.
To address these challenges, Q Sustain proposed a comprehensive set of solutions aimed at improving heating controls and reducing energy consumption. These solutions include upgrading the boiler BMS to incorporate advanced functionalities such as weather compensation, scheduling and remote access, insulating exposed pipework, installing smart radiator valves, and upgrading electric panel heaters to more efficient models with motion detection to name a few.
Implementation of all recommendations resulted in a reduction in carbon emissions of 16-40% in carbon emissions due to gas.
We help our clients achieve greater engineering efficiencies with better economic and social outcomes.
